Except for one city, all others have deployed 5G in either pilots and testing or commercial use.The DCI cities acknowledge and support 5G and almost all have a strategy in place to recognize multiple use-case applications like fixed wireless access, enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine-type communications, and the IoT. Cities are 5G-ready however, the rollout needs to be comprehensive for enabling the full realization of the true benefits of the next-gen connectivity.The pandemic has prompted municipalities across the world to step up their investments in connectivity potentially creating a new era of more direct intervention to address digital divides.Almost half of the cities score below 70 out of 100 indicating that connectivity levels are too low or limited to allow for comprehensive digital transformation.This is an indicator of how cities worldwide are performing in quantitative metrics like internet speed and qualitative factors like the presence of strategies, policies and plans for technologies like 5G and AI. The inaugural Digital Cities Index (DCI) 2022 lists a global ranking of 30 cities across four thematic pillars – connectivity, services, culture, and sustainability. The new technologies, like artificial intelligence, the internet of things, cloud computing, and 5G connectivity, offer municipal authorities many powerful tools to make cities smarter, safer, cleaner, and more inclusive. ![]() The world’s cities have been building digital infrastructure and technologies for urban services over the last decade. ![]()
